Gerald’s Legs 10 Years After Treatment

Gerald was suffering from venous insufficiency for over 30 years. He sits down with Kam Carman and Dr. Mok 10 years after his treatment at Allure Vein Center to discuss his progress.

Treatment Options At Allure Vein Center

The Endovenous Laser Therapy is an advanced treatment that uses radiofrequency technology to treat varicose veins and venous insufficiency in less than 1 hour. An ultrasound may be performed prior to your procedure.  The medical assistant will then prepare your leg for treatment, which involves cleaning your leg with a sterile surgical scrub then placing sterile drapes around it.  Once your leg is prepped, the provider and vascular technologist will use ultrasound guidance to direct a laser fiber into the diseased vein.

During this procedure, the provider inserts a catheter into the vein through a tiny nick in the skin.  Anesthetic (numbing) fluid will be injected around the vein to protect the surrounding tissue.  You may feel some needle pokes and pressure during the numbing process.  Once numbing is complete, the laser is turned on and the fiber catheter emits radiofrequency or laser energy into the vein, causing damage to the collagen in the vein walls.

Afterward, the body will redirect blood through healthier veins and symptoms typically resolve. When the procedure is complete, your leg will be cleaned and an ace wrap bandage or a stocking will be placed on your leg.

Microfoam therapy is performed by injecting medication using ultrasound guidance.  Once the selected veins are marked, medication is injected directly into the diseased veins. Over time, the veins will close up and eventually dissolve.  Once these veins are closed, the blood flows through healthy veins.

Sclerotherapy is a simple procedure in which medication is injected directly into spider veins. The medication causes the veins to swell, close up and then dissolve.  This procedure is not considered medically necessary; therefore it is not covered by insurance.

Following the sclerotherapy treatment, you may experience bruising, discoloration and nodules, which may last for a few weeks.   It is common for the area to feel sensitive or swelling. It will take several weeks for the veins to dissolve and see changes.  Normally, multiple treatment sessions are necessary to achieve desired results.  You may have the area treated again in 6-8 weeks.

Allure Vein Center Aftercare

Radiofrequency Laser

A compression stocking or wrap, with an absorbent pad, will be used to cover the access site.  The absorbent pad may be removed after any drainage has stopped.  To avoid a rash, do not leave the pad in place for more than 12 hours.   The small bandage over the access site may be replaced if needed. If you are prescribed stockings, you may continue to wear them as needed or until any leg pain, tenderness or discomfort has subsided.

A stocking or a wrap with dressings will be placed on your leg. PLEASE do not remove this dressing for 48 hours.  If sutures are necessary, these will be removed in our office, 7-10 days after your treatment.

It is important that you walk for 20 minutes upon completing your vein procedure.   Since there is no downtime after your treatment, there isn’t a need to change your lifestyle.   There are no restrictions on activities; therefore you may continue any activities including work, exercise, and sports as usual.  You may return to work immediately following your procedure. Walking and/or exercise are recommended for a timely and successful treatment outcome.

What to expect

Your leg will be re-evaluated weekly during your course of treatment.  For best results, you may have one treatment performed weekly per leg. If both legs are treated you may come in twice a week for treatments.

After your procedure, it is normal to experience any of the following symptoms.

·  Leg discomfort, hard lumps, tenderness, swelling, numbness, bruising, pulling and redness. Although these symptoms are common, they may last for a few weeks.

·  To help with alleviating discomfort, you may take over the counter NSAIDS such as Ibuprofen, Naproxen sodium, etc. or Acetaminophen as needed for pain or discomfort. Topical Asper creme, warm or cold compresses may be applied to the affected area.  Also, you may wear compression stockings (if prescribed).

·  If traveling, we recommend that you wear compression stockings and walk when convenient.
